One of the easiest ways to ensure that your funeral takes place exactly as you would have wished is to get a funeral plan. Importantly, it also provides you with peace of mind that your loved ones will not be left to foot the bill come the time of your funeral.

What does a funeral plan cover?

Exactly what a funeral plan will cover depends on your wishes and how you want your funeral to take place. As we discussed in our article “Funeral options: what types of funeral are there?” there are many different ways that you or your loved one can be remembered.

As a funeral usually takes place around a week after someone has passed away, having a funeral plan already in place can mean that your loved ones are not given extra stress in what will probably already be a very emotional time.

Funeral plans tend to range from the simple and respectful to the very detailed and can often be tailored to your specific needs.  A simple plan would cover the basic elements of a funeral, such as transportation and care of the deceased, supply of a hearse, general arrangements of staff for the service and also a cash sum towards crematorium, church or cemetery fees.

A more detailed plan might also include luxury forms of transport for mourners, support and guidance from funeral planners for whoever is registering your death and arranging your service, as well as more personal touches like ‘thank you’ cards.

Should you decide to move away from your home then you may be able to transfer your plan to another funeral director.
